Audra Mcdonald stands out in the breadth of her talent and versatility as an actor and singer. As the winner of an unprecedented seven Tony Awards (two Grammy Awards) and one Emmy Award, McDonald was listed in the Time Magazine's list of 100 influential people in the year 2015. The president also awarded her Obama's National Medal of Arts for her work. She's equally comfortable on television, film and Broadway. The luminous tone of her voice is a perfect fit for the stage. Alongside her theatrical work she maintains a major career as a recording and concert performer who regularly appears at most prestigious venues in the world. McDonald was brought up in Fresno California by her musical parents. She studied classical music at the Juilliard School, New York. Following her graduation, she was awarded the first Tony Award as Best Performance of a Featured Artist an Musical in the Lincoln Center Theater for Carousel (1994). In the following four years, acting in Broadway's most acclaimed productions, Master Class by Terrence M. McNally (1996) and Ragtime (1998), she won two additional Tony Awards. In 2004 she won her fourth Tony for her role as Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012 she received her fifth--and her first for the category of leading actress in the role of her lead in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. One of the Tony Awards most-decorated performer in 2014 was Billie Holiday, who she played as the title character in Lady Day At Emerson's Bar & Grill. It's identical to the role she performed in her 2017 West End London debut for in which she's been nominated for an Olivier Award. In addition to setting the record for most awards won by actors in competition, she also became the first person to receive the award in all four acting categories. Her credits in the theatre include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). McDonald was first seen on television with the award-winning Peabody Award-winning CBS drama Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters's First Hundred Years. In 1999, she co-starred with Kathy Bates in ABC's acclaimed remake of Annie. She also had an occasional role in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit in the year 2000. McDonald's first Emmy came for the HBO movie adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit. The film was directed by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson as the main character the actress was back on network television in 2003. The actress starred on Mister Sterling and produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. The Bedford Diaries on the WB in the early part of 2006 as well as Kidnapped, NBC. McDonald was awarded a 4th Emmy award for her role in the HBO film special Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year the year 2016. McDonald starred along with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed drama produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. Having first appeared as U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald reprised her character (now known as Liz Reddick) as a season regular of The Good Fight on Paramount+ with 3 Critics Choice Award nominations for her performance. Presently, she is a guest star in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which airs on HBO.
