In the school she performed in performances on stage. The comedy musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was her Broadway debut. The Crucible revival came out the following year. She then appeared in the action thriller film Spartan (2004) and was awarded applause for her performance on the drama television film Gracie's Choice (2004).Her first major role was that of the title character in the teen noir TV series Veronica Mars (2004-2007), receiving critical acclaim and the Saturn Award for Best Actress on TV for her performance. The character that she was playing in the 2014 movie was changed and recast for the year 2019. Bell was in the musical Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005) as Mary Lane. This was the reprise of her role from her New York musical. Bell was also in Heroes, the superhero drama, as Elle Bishop, from 2007 from 2007 to the year 2008. Bell played the role of the narrator in the title role for the teen drama series Gossip Girl. The 2021 sequel will see her reprise the role. Bell was also Showtime comedy House of Lies' lead actress, Jeannie van de Hooven. Bell starred in the lead character in the role of Eleanor Shellstrop on the critically well-reviewed NBC comedy series The Good Place, receiving a Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance. Bell also Bell played the lead role in the streaming show The Woman in the House across the street from the Girl in the Window.
